How to Care for Maine Coon Teeth

Dental disease and gum problems are common in cats, and Maine Coons are no exception. In this article we look at common gum problems, their signs, and how to care for your cat's teeth at home.

Maine Coon Teeth and Gum Problems

Healthy gums are pale or bright pink. Problems can start as early as kittenhood or appear later in adult life, so it pays to check your cat's mouth regularly.

Feline Gingivitis

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums. Food and bacteria build up around the teeth and irritate the gum line.

Common signs of gingivitis:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Bad breath
  • Drooling

Regular cleanings and monitoring by your vet are the usual treatment.

Stomatitis

Stomatitis is a painful inflammation of the whole mouth. If you notice any of these signs, see your vet:

  • Bad breath
  • Growling at food or turning the head sideways when eating
  • Weight loss or loss of appetite
  • Decreased grooming

Daily brushing is ideal but not realistic for every family. Start slowly, use a toothpaste made for cats, and reward your cat afterwards.

Products That Can Help

Look for dental treats, food and water additives that carry the VOHC Seal of Acceptance. Ask your vet which products they recommend.

Prevention is better than treatment. If you notice any sign of gum disease, see your vet early. Good pet insurance can also help with dental costs.
